Bed tax hot item vandaag in Engeland

The price of a holiday at a bed and breakfast on the British seaside has become a hot topic for politicians.
An independent report looking into the potential of a local tourism tax, which has also been called a “bed tax”, has led the Conservative party to launch a campaign to ’save the great British holiday’.

    Our rates reflect good value for money, and do we need a Government tax? No we don’t. It’s just another part of the bureaucracy that’s not needed and not necessary

    Manogue, who has owned the Sanford House for 16 years, has seen her business dwindle as outside factors, such as the hike in gasoline prices, have caused fewer people to travel. She fears the additional tax will be just one more deterrent.

    When funding for tourism promotions is done by local chambers of commerce, many owners of bed and breakfasts feel like they’re getting short-sheeted, so to speak.

    Mr. Burrell reminded the group that when the bed tax was created a couple of years ago he had opposed it. He told the group that the intent and purpose of the fee is for the money to be invested back into the county through outside tourism promotions.

    When reached early today, John Sayegh, chief operating officer of the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce, said his organization does plan to include bed-and-breakfast businesses from the Olean area in upcoming advertisements.
